Felt Work: Urban Mat is the product of a material investigation into the conceptual possibilities of living as an ‘urban nomad’ by moving within and between the ‘striated’ and ‘smooth’ spaces of the city. Through thickening a 2 x 2 metre unit of felt using construction techniques inherent to its non-woven structure —such as needle-felting and felt moulding—different surface conditions are created. The resulting garment responds to multiple corporeal postures, and operates both as individual enclosure and modular urban territory.
